Hot dogs & pimento cheese sandwiches made a lot of students happy at the 1st ever ‘Tailgate @ Reynolds Libraries’ this week. 440 folks soaked up the atmosphere, smiled & munched away as the thud of cornhole was heard in the background for our library open house event. A short hunt for online library resources encouraged students, faculty & staff to investigate library databases… & gather up prizes. Some students even found a book!
On Tuesday, September 20th & Wednesday, September 21st—Reynolds Libraries at Parham and Downtown opened their doors to a flurry of activities…
From the smallest of hopes to the biggest of dreams, Reynolds students added their goals to Post-It Note walls.
Advice on resumes and employment were in demand as students flocked to the Career Specialists who served as the main attraction.
A selfie frame helped to break the ice & get students to think about “My Future Self.” See all the great photos here.
Two lucky students—one from Parham and one from Downtown—actually won Kindle Fire tablets! *****Goochland Library will give away one more on October 26th to a lucky student who visits between 11-1!!!
On September 15th & 16th, 2015 Reynolds Libraries treated students, faculty and staff to an Open House event featuring the crazy combination of donuts, exercise moves and mobile devices. Guests were invited to explore new mobile checkouts (like laptops, Chromebooks & iPads), try a Bookmark Workout, get a picture taken in our iPad Photo Booth, and even sample local donut delicacies from around RVA.
The ‘donut party’ as one student called it, featured a blind taste test of 3 local donut shops…Sugar Shack, Duck Donuts, and Country Style. After tasting all three confections, participants voted on their favorite. With 46.2% of the votes, Country Style won! In addition, Krispy Kremes were served to everyone who completed a library survey using iPads. To burn off those calories, two librarians demonstrated how to work out with your favorite book. An app called Camstar delivered silly photos in the iPad Photo Booth, and last but not least… new mobile checkouts– featuring laptops, Chromebooks, and iPads–were shown off. We hope everyone had as much fun as the library staff.
The library staff would like to invite you to join us for our 3rd Annual Reynolds Library Open House!

We can’t wait to see you there!
The 2nd Annual Library Open Houses from Sept. 8-10, 2014 were all a great success. Library staff welcomed over 300 students, faculty, staff and the community to the events with exciting library resources, fun activities and food.
Participants learned about the library’s popular streaming video databases such as Films and Demand and SWANK Motion Pictures, tested their library search skills by playing a game of Library Jeopardy, took a self-guided tour of the library through an iPad Scavenger Hunt, tested some educational apps and eBooks on the iPads, created crafts like giant tissue paper flowers and loom bracelets, practiced T’ai Chi Chih as a healthy and productive work/study break, enjoyed a variety of refreshments, and won cool prizes like a Reynolds t-shirt and a set of earbuds!
For some students, this was their first visit to the library and offered them a friendly introduction to the library’s space and services. Participants commented that access to computers and the internet, comfortable atmosphere, friendly staff are the things they like most about Reynolds Libraries. One student said she likes the “helpful staff and the feeling of sanctuary in the library.” A faculty member added that “my favorite thing about the library are the personable, friendly, helpful people. Thanks to all the good folk at the library for everything you do.”
We strive to be helpful to students, staff, and community users and we enjoyed the opportunity to advertise our presence and promote our services. We look forward to another exciting year of working with our students and helping them succeed at Reynolds and beyond!

In September 2013 Reynolds Library welcomed students and faculty back with open houses on the Parham Road and Downtown campus locations. With over 200 hundred attendees, the events were a tremendous hit and attracted both library regulars and newbies. The library took this opportunity to dazzle the college community with library services and new resources. More than one student commented, “The library should do this more often!”
Activities at the events included; a technology petting zoo, a mobile scavenger hunt, bead making, altered books, and hula hoop dancing. Many were thrilled at the chance to use an iPad in our mobile scavenger hunt. Others scanned their first QR code or learned the fundamentals of downloading eBooks to their mobile device. “QR codes are great,” one student told another, “you can get discounts and all sorts of stuff when you scan them.”
Maker spaces were a welcomed edition to the event. At the Altered Book table students marveled that the librarians were actually letting them write on, cut up, tear apart, glue and tape books. At the bead making table, students were equally amazed to see how simple paper could be made into a beautiful piece of jewelry. One young man even made a bracelet for his mother.
One of the greatest take-a-ways from the event, without a doubt, was the opportunity for the college community to provide feedback for the library. Each participant who took a library survey received a free pair of ear buds. Comments included, “I can ask for help and someone comes to my rescue,” and “staff is exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful.” The fact that so many participants remarked on the quality of staff just goes to show that no matter how many new resources and new technologies we provide for our college community, the most valued resource will always be the library staff who are committed to helping faculty and students find the information they need to succeed.
